Co-operative Group have set a tough target in their Ethical Operating Plan to divert all waste from landfill by 2013. The presentation would act as a case study demonstrating how a major UK retailer has confronted this challenge and would discuss the options that the business had and the path that was ultimately taken to reach this objective. It will all be set against a backdrop of the need to remain commercially focussed during these austere times and will therefore also discuss how the chosen initiative will deliver significant cost savings to the Group over the next few years. The Co-operative Group are embracing the concept of back hauling waste to distribution depots as the initial solution to managing their waste streams. The financial and carbon benefits this solution can deliver are vast but the risks and issues that it attracts are extensive. The presentation will discuss the challenges we faced with this and the careful stakeholder management that was involved to deliver this solution. It will then discuss how the Group has started to segregate waste in to different streams (cardboard, polythene, paper, DRM, food waste, etc?)
