My career in microbiology started as laboratory technician in the meat, fish and poultry industries. From this I moved into research in environmental and industrial microbiology during the late 90s. Microbiology was going through a step change in technology at this time, from traditional culture techniques to DNA based study, which opened up many opportunities to understand and exploit microorganisms. I first met the inventors of the Microcycle™ technology for coolant disposal as a PhD student in Oxford through our mutual interest in the microbiological degradation of xenobiotic and recalcitrant compounds, and the elimination of their adverse environmental impacts.
