Delivering the Zero Waste vision
| Date/Time: | 24 May 2012 13:30-14:00 |
| Location: | Environmental and Land Remediation Theatre |
Seminar Details The drive amongst businesses towards achieving the elusive 'zero waste to landfill' is more prominent than ever before. But how do we get there?
Making zero waste a reality
- Waste has a vital role to play in meeting broader 'carbon neutral' targets
- Waste is an asset and resource
- Working to waste hierarchy: markets for recycled material are developing rapidly. And where material cannot be recycled we are recovering energy
How we do it
- Demonstrating that it saves money (landfill tax rising, recycling and recovery is increasingly cost neutral, wasted material is wasted money)
- Working with customers to reduce costs
- Implementing the technology and infrastructure to do it (Super MRFs, Biffa Polymers, anaerobic digestion plants)
Some real-world examples
- The technology - anaerobic digestion (Super AD plant in Cannock)
- Household service - South Oxfordshire District Council first to reach 70% recycling: commingled AWCs, separate food/green waste collection
- C&I service - Moy Park went from 85% waste to landfill, to 90% recycling and recovery in 12 months - Integrated Waste Management service works with businesses to remove waste.
What next?
- Develop infrastructure to handle more material
- Continue to develop and roll-out new and improved technology
- Develop secondary commodity markets
Local authorities, waste management companies, material recyclers, businesses looking to reduce waste should attend.
Delegates will learn how we can move towards the zero waste to landfill vision including the infrastructure and technology that is developing (such as AD and mixed plastics recycling) and the types of services that are proven to work both in household recycling and C&I.
